Shadowspear

Shadowspear was originally introduced as a mythic rare artifact in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Theros Beyond Death. Designed as a legendary equipment card, it draws heavily from the themes of Greek mythology and the plane of Theros, specifically referencing the dark, god-slaying weapon associated with Erebos, the god of the dead. Its mechanical design, which grants both lifelink and trample while stripping hexproof and indestructible from opposing creatures, was crafted to serve as a powerful utility tool against resilient threats in competitive formats.

The card features illustration by Yeong-Hao Han, whose work emphasizes the ethereal and menacing nature of the spear through a stark, high-contrast aesthetic. Upon its release, it was widely received as a staple in various formats, including Modern and Commander, due to its versatility and ability to swing momentum in games where opponents rely on defensive keywords. Its inclusion in The List—a curated selection of reprints integrated into set boosters—ensured its continued availability and relevance to players long after the conclusion of the Theros Beyond Death release cycle.
