What it does
Play with Fire deals 2 damage to any target. If a player is dealt damage this way, scry 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put that card on the bottom.)
Devils find human dwellings to be oppressively cold, dark, and unburnt.

Where it came from
Play with Fire was released in the 2024 Foundations Jumpstart set, serving as a functional reprint and thematic successor to the iconic red burn spell Shock. Designed for the modern Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, the card captures the classic 'red deck' philosophy of trading resources for direct damage, while providing the added flexibility of a scry 1 effect. This utility ensures the card remains a staple in aggressive strategies where managing the top of the deck is as vital as reducing an opponent's life total.
The art and design trajectory of this card reflect the broader aesthetic shift within the Foundations block, which aims to provide accessible, high-impact spells for new and returning players. By iterating on the long-standing tradition of two-damage burn spells, the designers sought to balance simple mechanical interaction with the strategic depth required for competitive play. Its inclusion in Jumpstart highlights its role as a foundational piece of equipment for players building their own card pools.
