Where it came from
Play with Fire was released in September 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a functional successor to the iconic Shock, providing a similar two-damage effect for a single red mana while adding a Scry 1 ability to improve card selection. This slight power adjustment reflects the modern design philosophy of providing minor utility to lower-rarity instant spells to ensure they remain relevant in various formats.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captured the gothic-horror aesthetic central to the Innistrad plane. The illustration depicts a pyromantic mage conjuring flames amidst the bleak, dark landscape characteristic of the setting. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency and versatility, quickly becoming a staple in red-based aggressive decks across multiple formats due to its ability to clear early-game threats or push final damage while simultaneously smoothing out future draws.
