Where it came from
Plaza of Heroes was released in September 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Dominaria United. The set was designed to celebrate the game's 30th anniversary by returning to the franchise's foundational setting, featuring mechanics that highlight legendary creatures and the deep history of the world. The card serves as a utility land, mechanically reinforcing the set's focus on legendary themes by providing mana flexibility and protection for key figures.
The card was illustrated by artist Dmitry Burmak, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering art catalog. His design for the Plaza of Heroes captures the majestic and somber architecture of the plane's historic landmarks, aligning with the set's aesthetic of grandeur and nostalgia. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in decks focused on legendary permanents, securing its place as a staple in both Commander and various competitive constructed formats.
