Where it came from
Plaza of Heroes was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set, specifically within the promotional card series tied to the return of the Magic: The Gathering storyline to its titular plane. The card was designed to function as a powerful land that supports legendary-themed decks, reflecting the plane’s deep historical focus on iconic heroes and historical figures. Its inclusion in the set was intended to provide players with a utility tool that emphasizes the cooperative nature of legendary characters working in unison.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was crafted to evoke the grand, architectural majesty of the titular Plaza. The illustrator focused on a high-fantasy aesthetic that highlights the location as a sanctuary for the game's legendary creatures. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its strategic versatility, quickly becoming a staple in Commander and other formats that center on legendary permanents, cementing its reputation as both a functional and thematic success within the set.
