Where it came from
Plea for Guidance was released in 2014 as part of the Born of the Gods expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the Theros block, the card is deeply rooted in the set's top-down design philosophy, which aimed to capture the essence of Greek mythology. As an enchantment-focused set, Born of the Gods sought to provide mechanical support for the belief systems and divine interactions that defined the world of Theros.
The card was illustrated by the artist Chase Stone, who was tasked with visualizing the act of a mortal supplicant seeking favor from the gods. Stone utilized a painterly, atmospheric style to evoke a sense of divine scale and spiritual weight. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for Limited formats and niche Constructed decks, noted specifically for its thematic resonance with the set's focus on devotion and enchantment synergies.
