Where it came from
Plumb the Forbidden was first released in the 2021 Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version, numbered 7114, is part of a specialized Secret Lair Drop series, which Wizards of the Coast utilizes to offer curated, artist-driven reprints of existing cards. These drops typically feature unique aesthetic themes that diverge from standard expansion art, allowing the company to engage collectors with limited-run, stylistic interpretations of mechanical favorites.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by the artist Magali Villeneuve. Known for her work within the fantasy genre, Villeneuve was commissioned to provide a distinct, high-fantasy interpretation of the card's theme, which centers on the concept of sacrificing resources for knowledge. The design choice leans into the atmospheric and dark scholastic aesthetic associated with the Strixhaven setting, aiming to balance thematic depth with the visual elegance expected of the Secret Lair premium product line.
