Where it came from
Felidar Retreat was originally released in the 2020 expansion Zendikar Rising, designed as a rare enchantment that rewards players for playing lands and creating tokens. The card quickly became a staple in Commander and other eternal formats due to its ability to scale in power over time, providing both board presence and offensive pressure. The specific Secret Lair version, featuring collector number 2378, was released as part of the 'Special Guest' or artist-focused series, showcasing an alternate art style intended to highlight the mystical, feline nature of the creature.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Zezhou Chen, who utilized a distinct, ethereal aesthetic to differentiate it from the original design. By focusing on the elegance of the felidar within the context of the Zendikar landscape, the design aimed to capture the tranquil yet formidable spirit of the card. Upon release, the variant was well-received by collectors for its polished visual narrative and its status as a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for players looking to enhance their deck's thematic consistency.
