Polluted Mire

Polluted Mire was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998 as part of a cycle of lands that entered the battlefield tapped and provided two colors of mana while allowing a player to pay mana to draw a card. This specific printing appeared in the 2009 Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana, a preconstructed product designed to showcase the iconic rivalry between two of Magic: The Gathering's most prominent planeswalkers. The card's mechanics reflect the theme of slow, deliberate resource management often associated with black-aligned control decks.

The artwork for this printing retains the atmospheric, gothic sensibilities consistent with the card's history in the game. By including it in a duel deck, Wizards of the Coast aimed to provide players with functional utility lands that supported the deck's color identity while offering a nostalgic nod to earlier eras of the game. It was received by players as a staple utility piece for casual and thematic formats, valued for its ability to mitigate mana flood in the late game through its cycling ability.
