Polluted Mire

Polluted Mire was originally introduced in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999 as part of a cycle of cycling lands intended to provide players with late-game utility. The design philosophy behind these lands was to mitigate the frustration of drawing land cards when a player needed spells, allowing the card to be discarded for a fresh draw, which established a functional design language for land cards that remains relevant in Magic: The Gathering to this day.

The 2015 Commander printing features art by John Avon, whose landscape illustrations are iconic within the game for their atmospheric use of light and color. By the time this version appeared in the Commander 2015 preconstructed decks, the card had become a staple for budget-conscious deck builders looking to improve mana consistency in multi-color decks without the high cost of rare dual lands. It is widely regarded as a practical, utilitarian piece of card design that bridges the gap between basic lands and more expensive competitive alternatives.
