Where it came from
Polukranos, Unchained was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering expansion Theros Beyond Death. This card represents a reimagining of the original Hydra creature Polukranos, which first appeared in the 2013 Theros set, now depicted as a restless spirit escaped from the Underworld. The card was designed to reflect the set's central theme of escaping death, granting the creature a unique graveyard-based recursion mechanic.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who sought to capture the visceral, decaying nature of the mythic beast. By emphasizing the ethereal glow and the tattered appearance of the Hydra, Rainville aligned the visual identity with the set's dark, mythological tone. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its balance of flavor and tactical utility in graveyard-focused deck archetypes.
