Where it came from
Polukranos, Unchained (224p) was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death set, a return to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros. This specific version is a promotional variant, featuring the distinct 'showcase' frame treatment that utilized a unique, constellation-inspired art style meant to reflect the legendary nature of the gods and monsters residing in the Underworld.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the multi-headed hydra in a stark, stylized aesthetic that moved away from traditional high-fantasy realism to embrace a more mythical, ancient-vessel art style. This showcase frame design was developed by the Wizards of the Coast art team to provide a cohesive visual identity for the set's legendary creatures, and it was generally well-received by players for its thematic immersion and distinct departure from standard card visuals.
