Where it came from
Portal to Phyrexia was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War. The card depicts a key moment in the lore of the Multiverse, representing the terrifying gateway used by the Phyrexians to invade the plane of Dominaria. Its design reflects the set's focus on the deep-seated conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, serving as a powerful mechanical representation of the corrupting, metallic influence that the Phyrexians exert over everything they touch.
The artwork, illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, emphasizes a sense of scale and dread, utilizing the distinct aesthetic of New Phyrexia. Briclot intended to capture the claustrophobic and nightmarish transition between worlds, grounding the card in the dark, industrial gothic style established by earlier Phyrexian-themed expansions. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the community for its high mana cost balanced by a potent, game-altering ability that fits well within high-power archetypes and artifact-themed decks.
