Pox

Pox was originally introduced in the Stronghold expansion set of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed by the game's creator Richard Garfield. It was later reprinted in the Fifth Edition core set, which served as a comprehensive collection intended to standardize the game's mechanics and card pool for a wider audience at the time. The card's design is notorious for its symmetrical, devastating effect, forcing all players to sacrifice a third of their permanents and discard a third of their cards, reflecting the chaotic and punishing nature of black-aligned magic within the game's color pie.

The artwork for the Fifth Edition printing was provided by artist Quinton Hoover. Hoover was a legendary figure in the early years of the game, known for his distinct, fluid, and often dreamlike illustrative style that defined the aesthetic of early Magic sets. His depiction of the titular disease captures the grim, corrosive essence of the spell, remaining a recognizable and evocative piece of art that characterizes the high-variance, high-impact gameplay that defined the mid-90s meta-game.
