What it does
Each player loses a third of their life, then discards a third of the cards in their hand, then sacrifices a third of the creatures they control of their choice, then sacrifices a third of the lands they control of their choice. Round up each time.

Where it came from
Pox was released in 1995 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ice Age. This set marked a significant shift in the game's production, being the first to be sold in localized languages other than English. The card was designed to embody the brutal, attrition-based philosophy of black mana, mechanically forcing all players to sacrifice resources, discard cards, and lose life simultaneously. This symmetrical effect made it a notorious card for shifting the state of a board, punishing players for their greed or over-extension.
The evocative artwork for Pox was created by the artist Dameon Willich, who contributed numerous illustrations to the game during the mid-nineties. Willich’s visual interpretation of the card—a grim, decaying figure—perfectly captured the card’s namesake theme of virulent disease and inevitable decline. Upon its release, Pox was received as a high-risk, high-reward tactical tool, eventually becoming a cornerstone of niche 'Stax' or control archetypes that focus on resource denial rather than aggressive combat.
