Provenance

Where it came from

Primitive Justice was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Alliances was the third set in the Ice Age block and served as a sequel to the Homelands and Ice Age storylines, focusing on the political and martial conflicts following the global cooling event known as the Ice Age. The set is particularly noted for introducing a cycle of powerful pitch spells that allowed players to cast them without paying a mana cost by exiling a card of the same color.

The artwork for Primitive Justice was created by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. His style, characterized by a distinct, often moody and dark aesthetic, helped define the visual identity of early Magic sets. Primitive Justice was designed as a sorcery that allowed players to destroy target artifacts, a thematic reflection of the primal, anti-technological nature of the faction depicted in the card's lore. While the card did not become a staple of competitive tournament play, it remains a recognized example of the game’s expansion into more complex, niche mechanics during the mid-nineties.
