What it does
Cumulative upkeep—Exile the top card of your library. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)
When a player doesn't pay this enchantment's cumulative upkeep, that player exiles all cards from their library.
Exile the top card of your library: Prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to you this turn.

Where it came from
Thought Lash was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Created during a period of experimentation for the game, the set was designed to introduce complex, high-mana-cost cards that challenged standard gameplay strategies. As a blue enchantment, the card reflects the color's thematic focus on mental manipulation and the transient nature of resources, forcing players to manage their library as a depleting asset.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Margaret Organ-Kean, whose work frequently defined the surreal and slightly ethereal aesthetic of the mid-nineties card sets. Her design sought to capture the visceral sensation of having one's memories or thoughts stripped away. While the card is often cited by players as a niche, high-risk permanent, it remains a notable example of the experimental mechanical design that characterized the early years of the game's development.
