Where it came from
Promise of Power was originally printed in the 2004 set Mirrodin as a rare black sorcery, designed to showcase the high-risk, high-reward nature of black mana. The card allows players to draw cards and create a powerful creature token at the cost of life, reflecting the 'power at any price' philosophy of the game's black color identity. It was illustrated by artist Adam Rex, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style to capture the ominous essence of the spell.
The version included in the 2009 Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic collection, numbered 54, was released as part of a preconstructed set designed to highlight the flavor-based conflict between angelic and demonic archetypes. This specific reprint featured updated frame technology and served to introduce newer players to iconic high-impact spells. It remains a notable inclusion in the product for its synergy with the demon-themed mechanics that defined the Demonic deck.
