Provoke

Provoke was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Tempest block, Stronghold was designed to lean into the game’s growing focus on mechanical themes, specifically emphasizing graveyard interaction and creature-based strategies. This card, a green sorcery, reflects the set’s aggressive design philosophy which sought to provide players with more efficient ways to manipulate combat flow.

The artwork for Provoke was created by illustrator Randy Elliott. In line with the aesthetic of the late 1990s Magic era, the illustration features a dynamic, high-fantasy style meant to convey the visceral nature of forcing an opponent's creature into an unwanted battle. While the card is often remembered by longtime players for its straightforward, utility-driven role in limited formats, it remains a quintessential example of the period's card design, which prioritized clear, functional mechanics over the more complex interactions that would define later sets.
