Where it came from
Shock was first printed in the Stronghold expansion, released in March 1998 as the second set in the Rath Cycle. It was designed as a quintessential red instant, cementing the mechanical identity of red as the color of direct damage. The card was created to provide a low-cost, versatile removal spell that could target either a creature or an opponent, making it a staple for aggressive red decks of the era.
The original illustration was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic early artists for the game. His artwork for Shock captures the raw, elemental essence of red mana, depicting a bolt of energy crackling with intensity. The card was well-received upon release for its simplicity and efficiency, leading it to be reprinted in numerous Core Sets throughout the history of Magic: The Gathering.
