Psychatog

The Psychatog Magic Player Rewards promo was released in 2005 as a premium incentive for participants in the official Magic: The Gathering organized play program. The card itself represents a functional reprint of the iconic creature from the Odyssey expansion, which had previously dominated the tournament landscape. By reissuing it through the rewards program, Wizards of the Coast provided long-term players with a highly coveted, foil-etched version of a card that had become a staple in multiple competitive formats.

The illustration was created by artist Kev Walker, whose distinctively dark and visceral style defined much of the visual identity for the Odyssey block. Walker’s depiction of the Psychatog—a grotesque, ravenous beast—perfectly captured the card's mechanical flavor, where it physically grows in power by consuming cards from the player's graveyard. Upon its original release and subsequent promotional reprint, the art was widely praised for its menacing detail and remains a quintessential example of the aesthetic that characterized Magic’s early 2000s era.
