Provenance

Where it came from

Psychatog was first released in the 2001 Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed as a blue and black creature, it was conceptualized during a period when Wizards of the Coast was exploring graveyard-centric mechanics. The creature's ability to exile cards from a player's graveyard to gain power and toughness quickly made it a centerpiece for control-oriented strategies, allowing players to utilize their own resources as a flexible combat tool.

The card’s striking illustration was created by artist Kev Walker, who is well-known for his dark, visceral style within the game. Walker depicted the creature as a grotesque, multi-mouthed entity, perfectly capturing the theme of consumption and transformation. Upon its release, the card was received as a highly powerful engine in competitive play, eventually dominating the Standard and Extended formats of the early 2000s and becoming an iconic representation of the blue-black color identity.
