Psychic Puppetry

Psychic Puppetry was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The expansion drew heavy inspiration from Japanese mythology and folklore, introducing the concept of the Spirit subtype to reflect the mystical beings of the Kamigawa plane. This card was designed as a blue arcane spell, intended to interact with the game's unique 'splice onto arcane' mechanic, which allowed players to modify their spells by fueling them with additional effects from cards in their hand.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early development of Magic: The Gathering. Rush employed his signature style to illustrate the concept of ethereal manipulation, depicting a spirit exerting invisible influence over a warrior. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in combo-oriented deck builds, particularly those leveraging the untapped potential of spirits and arcane spells, though it remained a niche piece within the broader, highly varied Kamigawa card pool.
