Where it came from
Psychic Rebuttal was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to serve as a narrative bridge, exploring the origin stories and formative moments of five key Planeswalker characters. This specific card represents the internal struggle and defensive mental acuity of Jace Beleren, a telepathic mage whose history is central to the game's expansive lore.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Johann Bodin, who focused on capturing the visual essence of counter-magic through a psychic lens. The design reflects the set's intent to provide players with tools that mirrored the characters' growing abilities, using the spell mastery mechanic to reward players for casting multiple instants or sorceries. It was received as a situational but flavorful utility card, often appreciated by collectors for its depiction of Jace's intellectual combat style.
