Where it came from
The Psychomancer was released in 2020 as part of the Necron Dynasties deck in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Commander format play. The card was designed to represent the Necron Crypteks, specialized masters of physics and horror who manipulate reality to sow discord and fear among their enemies.
The illustration for the card, produced by artist Games Workshop, maintains the stark, metallic, and monolithic visual language associated with the Necron faction. By capturing the character’s unsettling ability to weaponize terror, the design effectively translates tabletop wargame lore into the card game's combat system. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a highly efficient utility piece for black-aligned decks, praised for its thematic accuracy and its ability to disrupt board states.
