Where it came from
The Psychomancer was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to integrate the grimdark lore and aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of the Commander format. It represents the Necron Dynasty faction, known for their cold, mechanical mastery over reality and ancient, lethal technology.
The illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a stark, metallic palette to evoke the soulless, monolithic nature of the Necron race. The design emphasizes the character's role as a manipulator of fear and perception, consistent with the lore of the Necron Cryptek caste. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic accuracy and its effectiveness in the specific synergistic strategies required for artifact-heavy decks.
