Pulverize

Pulverize was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to shift the game’s aesthetic toward a more mercantile, politically driven theme, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets. The card was created as a high-cost red sorcery intended to provide players with a dramatic method to reset the board state by destroying all artifacts, specifically rewarding players who had fallen behind in board development by allowing them to cast it for free if they sacrificed mountains.

The card’s artwork was provided by Scott M. Fischer, whose distinctive, visceral style was a hallmark of the era's card illustrations. Fischer focused on capturing the raw, chaotic energy of the spell's effect, emphasizing physical impact and destruction over mechanical detail. Upon release, the card was received as a niche tactical tool, primarily valued in sideboard strategies against artifact-heavy decks, rather than as a staple of competitive play, though it remains a recognized example of the game’s mid-era design philosophy.
