Aerial Caravan

Aerial Caravan was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of commerce, mercenary activity, and political deception, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets to focus on a bustling, trade-centric metropolis. The card functions as a blue utility piece, reflecting the set's mechanical focus on alternate casting costs and resource management within a market-driven environment.

The artwork for Aerial Caravan was illustrated by Rebecca Guay, a prominent artist known for her distinct, ethereal, and painterly style that became a hallmark of late-nineties Magic expansions. Guay’s design depicts the fantastical flying transports of the Mercadian skyline, utilizing soft, watercolor-infused textures that set the card apart from the more rigid digital art styles that would later dominate the game. Her contribution was well-regarded by collectors for bringing a whimsical, illustrative quality to a set otherwise defined by its gritty, urban industrial aesthetic.
