Provenance

Where it came from

Purphoros's Intervention is a red sorcery card released in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering expansion Theros Beyond Death. The set returned players to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros, focusing on themes of the underworld, gods, and devotion. This card represents the divine influence of Purphoros, the god of the forge, reflecting his domain over fire and creation through a flexible mechanic that allows players to either deal direct damage to a creature or create an elemental token.

The artwork was illustrated by Raymond Swanland, a veteran artist known for his dynamic, high-contrast, and often explosive digital style. Swanland was chosen to capture the raw, industrial power associated with Purphoros, using swirling embers and molten imagery to emphasize the god's destructive capacity. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatility in competitive formats, serving as a tactical removal spell in the early game and a late-game finisher.
