Provenance

Where it came from

Putrefy was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds set as a defining removal spell for the Golgari Swarm. Designed to showcase the synergy between black and green mana colors, the card represents the decay and regrowth central to the Golgari philosophy. Its mechanics, which allow for the destruction of either a creature or an artifact, solidified it as a staple utility card in many formats due to its versatility and efficiency.

This specific printing appeared in the Kaldheim Commander set in 2021. While the mechanics remained identical to the original design by Greg Staples, this version features updated art by Marta Nael, who was commissioned to provide a fresh visual interpretation suited for the Norse-inspired aesthetic of the Kaldheim release. The card was well-received by the player base for maintaining the utility of the original while integrating seamlessly into the thematic visual language of the commander deck it was included within.
