Provenance

Where it came from

Putrid Warrior was released in the Apocalypse expansion set for Magic: The Gathering in May 2001. As the third and final installment of the Invasion block, the set focused on the climactic battle against the Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. The card was designed as a low-cost, aggressive creature reflecting the decaying, grotesque aesthetic of the Phyrexian forces that defined the set's narrative.

The card illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, known for his distinct, gritty style that frequently appeared throughout the early 2000s sets. The artwork depicts a shambling, skeletal warrior consistent with the set's theme of biological horror and necrotic themes. Upon release, the card served primarily as a functional addition to Limited play formats and black-aligned tribal decks, valued for its efficient utility rather than its power level.
