Provenance

Where it came from

The Putrid Raptor was released in 2003 as part of the Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the conclusion of the Onslaught block, the expansion focused on the desperate conflict between the Krosa-mutated life forms and the invaders of the plane of Otaria. The card was designed as a common creature to facilitate the block's recurring 'morph' mechanic, which allowed players to cast creatures face-down as 2/2s before revealing them for a lower cost later.

The artwork was provided by the fantasy illustrator Greg Staples, who contributed extensively to the game during this era. His design for the Putrid Raptor emphasizes the grotesque, swamp-dwelling aesthetic characteristic of the set's cycle of undead beasts. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, if unremarkable, utility piece for Limited play, lauded primarily for its efficiency in decks designed to leverage the graveyard and the unique tactical flexibility of the morph ability.
