Pyrite Spellbomb

Pyrite Spellbomb first appeared in the 2003 Mirrodin set, a block defined by its heavy emphasis on artifact mechanics and metallic, industrial aesthetics. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering R&D team, the card was conceptualized as a versatile tool for red decks, allowing players to either deal damage to a target creature or player or draw a card, reflecting the volatile and resourceful nature of the artifact-rich plane of Mirrodin.

The card’s illustration was created by Greg Staples, who captured the item’s dangerous, explosive essence with a dark, gritty visual style characteristic of the set's harsh atmosphere. Over time, the Spellbomb became a recurring utility piece in the game’s history, eventually appearing in 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from throughout the game's past that Wizards of the Coast includes in random booster packs to celebrate the history of the franchise.
