Pyroblast

Pyroblast was first introduced in the 1993 Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed as a direct countermeasure to the dominance of blue-aligned cards in the game's early competitive environment. This specific version originates from the 1997 Pro Tour Collector Set, a series of pre-constructed decks that mirrored the compositions of the top-performing decks used by finalists during the 1997 Pro Tour season. These sets served as a way for the player base to experience high-level tournament deck builds, though the cards themselves were printed with gold borders on the reverse side to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards.

The card's original illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose work is central to the visual identity of early Magic sets. The design sought to visually represent the concept of magical destruction, using intense, fiery imagery to convey the card's function of destroying blue permanents or countering blue spells. While the Pro Tour Collector Set was not intended for sanctioned play, it remains a significant piece of Magic history, documenting the meta-game of the late nineties and preserving the iconic aesthetic of the game's foundational era.
