Provenance

Where it came from

Rabid Wombat was released as part of the Chronicles expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1995. The set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as a way to reprint popular or out-of-print cards from earlier sets, including Legends and The Dark, providing players with wider access to cards that had become difficult to acquire. The set was famously controversial among players at the time for its perceived lack of thematic cohesion and the inclusion of many cards that were considered mechanically weak or confusing in the game's evolving meta.

The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several illustrations to the game during its formative years. The design depicts a creature that gains power and toughness based on the number of enchantments attached to it, a mechanic that emphasizes the 'aura' strategies common in early green-aligned decks. While not considered a high-level competitive staple, the card remains a notable example of the whimsical and often literal creature design typical of mid-nineties fantasy trading card art.
