Where it came from
Raffine, Scheming Seer was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, specifically appearing as an alternate-art promotional card. This card was designed for the Magic: The Gathering card game, set within a plane inspired by 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and organized crime tropes. The character serves as the demon leader of the Obscura, a faction known for information brokerage and magical manipulation, fitting the set’s themes of noir-inspired political intrigue.
The illustration for this promotional version was executed by artist Justine Cruz, who employed a sharp, sophisticated visual style to emphasize Raffine's manipulative and calculating nature. The design leans heavily into the opulent, high-society elegance of the New Capenna setting, using refined lines and a color palette that reflects the character's status as a powerful, shadowy puppet master within the city's hierarchy.
