Where it came from
Raffine's Informant was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in a plane inspired by the art deco aesthetic of 1920s noir and organized crime, the card depicts a member of the Obscura, a faction of mages and spies led by the sphinx demon Raffine. The card was designed to embody the 'connive' mechanic, which simulates the intelligence-gathering and resource-refining nature of the faction within the game's mechanics.
The artwork was illustrated by Dominik Mayer, whose work is characterized by dramatic, angular compositions and a distinctively stylized approach to lighting that fits the high-contrast atmosphere of the New Capenna setting. His design captures the shadowy, information-brokering theme of the Obscura. Upon release, the card was widely utilized in competitive formats, particularly in Limited and Standard play, where its efficiency as a low-cost creature capable of filtering a player's hand and growing in strength was highly regarded by the community.
