Where it came from
Sanctuary Warden was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired art deco metropolis ruled by five rival crime families, with the Warden representing the architecture and divine protection associated with the Giada-linked faction. Its design reflects the set's focus on the 'shield counter' mechanic, which offers a defensive layer to creatures within the game's high-stakes urban environment.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a vibrant, gilded aesthetic to match the opulent, decadent tone of New Capenna. The illustration depicts an angelic sentinel that embodies the city's blend of grit and divine artifice. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its versatile utility in both casual and competitive formats, frequently praised for its ability to generate card advantage while maintaining a formidable presence on the battlefield.
