Where it came from
Rafiq of the Many was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a legendary creature representing the Bant shard, a plane defined by its rigid societal structure, emphasis on chivalry, and devotion to the concepts of order and nobility. As a centerpiece of the set, Rafiq was crafted to embody the set's three-color philosophy, requiring mana from green, white, and blue sources to cast.
The character's aesthetic was brought to life by illustrator Greg Staples, whose work often leans into high-fantasy realism. Staples aimed to depict Rafiq as a veteran knight, utilizing dynamic, armored detailing that reflected the aesthetic of the Bant culture. Upon its release, the card gained significant traction in the Commander format, where its ability to grant double strike to attacking creatures became a signature component for decks focused on voltron-style strategies and singular combat prowess.
