Raging Goblin

Raging Goblin was released in 1997 as part of the Portal set, an introductory standalone product designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring new players into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The set utilized simplified mechanics and streamlined rules to lower the barrier to entry, moving away from the complex stack-based interactions found in the main game at the time. As a common-rarity red creature, it served as a fundamental aggressive card intended to teach players the value of low-cost, hasty threats in early-game combat.

The artwork was provided by Pete Venters, a prolific illustrator who has contributed hundreds of pieces to the Magic: The Gathering catalog. Venters aimed for a visceral, classic fantasy depiction of the creature, emphasizing the chaotic and impulsive nature associated with the red color identity.
