Provenance

Where it came from

Steal Artifact was originally introduced as a staple blue enchantment in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield in 1993. It was conceived as a quintessential control card, allowing players to seize control of an opponent's artifact for the duration of the game. Its inclusion in the 1998 Collectors' Edition was part of a non-tournament-legal boxed set designed to commemorate the game's early history and provide players with access to classic, iconic cards that had become difficult to acquire on the secondary market.

The art, illustrated by Amy Weber, is noted for its dreamlike, surrealist composition that captures the opportunistic nature of the spell. In the context of the Collectors' Edition, the card features the signature gold-bordered back and square corners that distinguish it from standard tournament cards. While the Collectors' Edition cards were never permitted in official competitive play, they remain highly regarded by collectors for their historical significance, premium finish, and role in preserving the aesthetic legacy of the game's initial release.
