Where it came from
Rain of Blades was released in 2003 as part of the Scourge expansion, the final set in the Onslaught block of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to round out the block's focus on tribal synergies and high-risk mechanical themes, with Rain of Blades specifically serving as a white-aligned reactive spell meant to punish players who relied on swarming the battlefield with small creatures.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator for the game during this era. Moeller aimed to visually represent the chaotic and sweeping nature of the spell, opting for a style that favored dramatic movement and clear atmospheric effects. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but functional sideboard tool, valued primarily for its specific utility against aggressive decks in competitive play.
