Where it came from
Rain of Blades was released in the Magic 2013 core set in July 2012. As a white sorcery card, it functions as a localized board wipe, dealing damage to each creature attacking or blocking. It was designed to provide white decks with a tactical tool to punish opponents for committing too many creatures to the combat phase, reflecting the color's traditional role of maintaining order and managing aggression.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. He chose a high-action composition intended to capture the kinetic energy of a falling barrage of steel, emphasizing the scale and intensity of the spell's impact. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility option, valued by limited format players for its ability to stabilize a board state, though it saw limited play in more competitive, high-velocity formats.
