Provenance

Where it came from

The Rakdos Signet was originally introduced in the 2006 Guildpact expansion, serving as a functional mana-fixing tool for players dedicated to the color combination of black and red. Within the lore of Ravnica, the signet represents the Rakdos Cult, a chaotic guild known for their love of hedonistic spectacle and destructive impulses. By allowing players to filter mana through the inclusion of these two colors, the artifact became a staple for deck-building strategies that favored aggressive, high-risk gameplay.

For the Modern Masters 2017 reprint, the card received updated art by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more literal interpretations of the signet to capture the visceral, dark aesthetic of the guild. This set was curated to revitalize the Modern format, and the inclusion of the Rakdos Signet provided essential support for draft archetypes and Commander players alike. It was well-received by the community for both its aesthetic update and its continued utility in multi-color deck constructions.
