Provenance

Where it came from

The Rakdos Signet was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension expansion set, the final installment of the Ravnica: City of Guilds block. It was designed as a functional mana-fixing tool to represent the hedonistic and destructive Rakdos Cult, one of the ten iconic guilds inhabiting the cityscape of Ravnica. These signets were central to the limited and constructed environments of the era, providing players with a consistent way to accelerate their mana while reflecting the color identity of their chosen guild.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, who captured the chaotic and jagged aesthetic associated with the Rakdos guild. Staples utilized a style characterized by sharp, industrial-looking metalwork and the signature color palette of black and red, grounding the item within the dark fantasy world-building of the set. Upon its release, the card was widely recognized by players for its utility in multi-colored decks and its thematic coherence, securing its place as a staple piece of Magic: The Gathering equipment.
