Where it came from
Ramirez DePietro, Pillager was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, a collection designed to celebrate the rich, multi-generational history of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This card serves as a reimagined, updated version of the original Ramirez DePietro legend first introduced in the 1994 expansion Legends. The design intent was to honor the character's legacy as a notorious pirate of the Kher Ridges while modernizing his mechanics to reflect contemporary gameplay standards.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who sought to capture the swashbuckling essence of a commander leading his crew through the turbulent waters of the Dominaria setting. By emphasizing a bolder, more dynamic aesthetic, the design team aimed to provide players with a refreshed take on a classic villain. The card was well-received by the community for its thematic coherence and its ability to serve as a flavorful centerpiece for pirate-themed deck builds.
