Where it came from
Torsten, Founder of Benalia was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set. The character holds a significant place in Magic: The Gathering lore as a legendary hero who helped unite the fractured human tribes of Benalia during the period following the Brothers' War. His inclusion in the Commander expansion was intended to give players a tangible connection to the deep history of the Dominaria plane, specifically highlighting the foundational figures of its most iconic kingdom.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on rendering Torsten as a stoic, battle-hardened commander, emphasizing his role as both a leader and a strategist. The design team crafted his mechanics to reflect his lore-heavy status as a legendary human knight, providing a high-mana value card that rewards players for building a board presence. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful tribute to Dominarian mythology, well-regarded by fans of the game's expanded storytelling and historical continuity.
