Rampaging Ferocidon

Rampaging Ferocidon was released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan, a plane heavily inspired by Mesoamerican cultures and age-of-discovery exploration. The card was designed as a rare red creature intended to punish strategies that relied on creating wide boards of tokens, effectively serving as a hate card for go-wide aggressive playstyles that were prevalent in the competitive landscape at the time.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Zack Stella, who leaned into the aggressive, prehistoric aesthetic of the Ixalan dinosaur sub-theme. Upon its release, the card proved highly potent in competitive formats, eventually leading to its suspension and banning in the Standard format due to its ability to stifle deck diversity and exert too much pressure on the game's balance. Its design remains a notable example of a pushed aggressive creature that significantly impacted tournament play.
