Rapid Decay was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny set, the final installment in the ambitious Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on the complex interplay between artifacts and enchantments, reflecting the high-fantasy narrative of the artificer Urza. The card was designed to provide black-aligned players with an efficient, focused tool to interact with graveyard-based strategies, a recurring mechanic that gained significant prominence during this era of game development.

The card features distinct, atmospheric artwork by illustrator Thomas M. Baxa, whose signature dark and visceral style was a staple of the late 90s Magic aesthetic.
