Where it came from
Rapid Decay was originally printed in the Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, but this specific version originates from the 1999 World Championship Decks. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a way for the general public to purchase near-identical replicas of the exact 60-card decks used by the top eight finalists at the 1999 World Championship. They are easily distinguished from standard game cards by their gold-bordered backs and the player’s gold-stamped signature on the front.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in Magic: The Gathering’s early visual identity. His design for Rapid Decay captures a dark, decaying aesthetic intended to evoke the mechanical and necrotic themes of the Urza block. While these collector decks were not tournament-legal, they were well-received by the player base as a practical way to study high-level deck-building strategies and preserve a tangible slice of competitive history.
